Reflections of the Growing Mind: Young Adult Literature and Culture Organised by the Department of English, Surendranath College for Women Venue: Gitanjali Auditorium, Surendranath College for Women, 24 M.G. Road, Kolkata 700009. Time: 10 am to 4 pm The Department of English, Surendranath College for Women is going to organize a seminar on Young Adult Literature. The seminar is an attempt to understand the ways in which Young Adult Literature has developed over the years as a distinct type of literature, and the possibilities it offers as an area of scholarly research. Concept Note Young Adult Literature across the world has always been unique because of the diversity of its readership. Originally written for adolescent readers, literary works of this kind never fail to appeal even to adult readers. On the one hand, these works bear traces of the deceptive simplicity of children’s literature; on the other hand, they manifest the hardened cynicism of adult fiction. This inherent dualism of young adult literature makes them intriguing. Besides, young adult literature opens up a wide scope for critical observation of its target-readers—the adolescents, who, being on the verge of adulthood, experience phenomenal changes in their perceptions.
From canonical works of previous centuries like Charles Dickens’s David Copperfield, Henry Fielding’s Tom Jones, and J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye to Harry Potter novels of the 21st Century—several literary works of this category have used the bildungsroman form. However, young adult literature has also made its presence felt in the domains of detective fiction (Agatha Christie novels, Feluda novels), science fiction (The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins; Professor Shanku novels by Satyajit Ray), fantasy (Lord of the Rings trilogy, JRR Tolkien), nonsense literature (by Lewis Carroll and Sukumar Ray), and even magic realism (Haroun and the Sea of Stories, Salman Rushdie). Highlights of the seminars:
His Excellency, the Governor of W.Bengal, Sri M.K.Narayanan inaugurated the Political Science seminar and delivered the Keynote Address.
All the seminars were held in Geetanjali, the college –auditorium with a huge number of delegates and students in attendance. Parallel sessions had to be arranged in some of our larger classrooms, so great was the number of speakers on certain days.
A giant screen in our garden catered to the audience who could not enter the packed auditorium.
The students of some of the departments were also given the opportunity to present papers during the sessions.
The students of the English department were wonderful in their presentation of a modern version of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. They had written the screenplay themselves.
Last but not least, we can proudly state that our college was honoured by the presence of a large number of eminent dignitaries of various fields who had most kindly made time , inspite of their busy schedules, to attend these seminars. We thank them all.
